Sept. 11 Ceremonies Held Across New York
NEW YORK
A day before the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, families, firefighters and elected officials gathered to celebrate heroes and to honor the dead.
President Bush and first lady Laura Bush traveled to New York on Sunday to attend ceremonies commemorating the anniversary. They joined New Yorkers at a memorial service at St. Paul's Chapel, a 240-year old Episcopal church on the edge of ground zero. Five years ago, the chapel served as a sanctuary for weary emergency workers.
Earlier, the president and first lady went to ground zero and laid wreaths where the World Trade Center towers once stood. They bowed their heads in silent prayer as bagpipers played nearby.
